Through its “Rapid Response, Swift Action” project, Nei Mom Uprising is putting women at the heart of climate and disaster preparedness in Kiribati. The initiative responds to the disproportionate impacts of flooding, saltwater intrusion, drought, water and food insecurity, extreme weather and other climate-related emergencies on women and children.
From community consultations to a Disaster Preparedness and Response Dialogue involving 74 participants, women strengthened their practical understanding of weather warnings, early action, WASH, food security, GBV and protection. Participants learned how to turn climate information into practical actions—from securing homes and storing safe water and food to identifying evacuation areas and knowing where to seek support.
The project has also helped establish and strengthen Climate Crisis Focal Points, improve coordination and referral pathways, develop a Rapid Response Policy and Action Plan, and prepare emergency supplies for timely deployment.
From preparedness to action, Nei Mom Uprising is strengthening women’s leadership so that women are not only seen as vulnerable during climate emergencies—they are equipped, connected and empowered to lead the response.
